The Perfect Getaway

Little Raccoon Key is a reef island off the coast of Georgia, and part of the Golden Isles of Georgia. It is a small, uninhabited island, and we want to keep it that way!  The abundant marine, land, and bird life makes the unspoiled island one-of-a-kind. Little Raccoon Key’s objective is to maintain and share the natural beauty of the island while focusing on the conservation of the wildlife and plant species found on the island.

Answers to common questions

We’ve compiled a list of answers to common questions.

What should I bring?
  • Sunglasses
  • Hat
  • Boots (for walking around the oyster reefs)
  • Bug Spray
  • Sun Protective Clothing
  • Sunscreen
  • Food, Drinks, & Cooler (for Glampers)
Will food and water be provided?

During the tours, water and a light snack will be provided.  For Glamping, you should bring your own food, drinks, and cooler.  A cooler of ice will be provided and a large 5 gallon water bottle will also be at the site.

What will the weather be like during my stay?

It can be very difficult to predict the weather around any coastal area, so it is always best to check with weather experts at weather.com.  The weather at Jekyll Island will be an appropriate estimate for the weather on Little Raccoon Key.

How do we get to Little Raccoon Key?

Your Little Raccoon Key experience will include an onboard marine history and biology tour to and from the island.  Little Raccoon Key is about a 10 minute boat ride from Jekyll Island, and it is a beautiful ride.  During this trip, you can see St. Simons Island, Jekyll Island, Cumberland Island, & the gorgeous Sydney Lanier Bridge.  The waters between Little Raccoon Key and Jekyll Island are teeming with wildlife, and it is common to see large pods of Dolphin swimming by the island or Pelicans diving into the water to catch fish.  Be sure to have your camera ready! Once you book your experience with us, we will reach out to you with directions and timing.

Will there be a refund if there is a hurricane?

Stormy weather does not qualify for a re-schedule or refund; however, if an evacuation is advised, we will be happy to re-schedule your stay.

How many guests can stay at Little Raccoon Key?

The bed will sleep 2; however, the room is large enough to accommodate 2 more in sleeping bags.

Do you allow pets?

Unfortunately, as much as we love to have pets around us, Little Raccoon Key can be a little dangerous for your pets.  The likelihood of them cutting their paws on an oyster shell or getting stuck by a cactus is high.  Also, the currents around our island can be quite strong even for the strongest of swimmers, so to prevent you from losing a beloved member of your family, we ask that you do not bring pets to the island.

How will I cook my food?

We have a gas grill available for you to cook your food.  We also have a set of dishes, pots, and pans available to you.  Basic, shelf-stable condiments like salt, pepper, and cooking oil will be provided.  Soap for the dishes will also be provided.

Is there air conditioning and a refrigerator?

No, in order to keep Little Raccoon Key as unspoiled as possible, we have decided to generate all of our power from solar panels.  With that said, these panels will generate enough to power the lights and charge a phone; however, we do not have a refrigerator and we do not have air conditioner.  The island gets a lot of cool air from the ocean breeze; however battery powered fans will also be provided.

Is there running water?

No, all water provided for showers will be brought on the island in shower bags.  These bags are black and they warm up the water throughout the day in the sun, so you can have a warm shower in the evening (or a cool, invigorating shower in the morning)!  Additionally, a toilet is provided; however, it does not have running water, so the staff will empty the contents when you depart.

What is there to do on Little Raccoon Key?

Your number one priority should be RELAXING!  We have multiple hammocks, Adirondack chairs, and lounges for you to enjoy.  If you get bored with relaxing (and some people do), you can explore the island’s oyster shell beaches, watch the dolphins and pelicans in the sound, or book a Kayak tour.

Can we swim in the river?

You should swim at your own risk; however, we do not recommend that you swim in the water.  The water is teeming with wildlife, and some of them have teeth!  Also, the current produced by the strong tides in the area can pull even the strongest swimmers out to sea.  It is best to enjoy the beauty of the ocean from the shore.

Where do I park my car?

Once you book your stay, we will reach out to you with this information.

When can I check in & check out?

Once you book your stay, we will reach out to you with this information.  We can be flexible if the weather permits, and if we not booked for the next day.

What happens in case of a medical emergency?

A small first-aid kit is located in the tent.

Should you need medical assistance, dial 911 and tell the operator you are on Little Raccoon Key, stay on the line until the operator tells you to hang up. Second, please call us at 706-284-3247 for immediate pick-up.
